Do you Tangerine Tango?

I've always been interested in the colors that Pantone chooses for their colors of the year. Remember in late 2009 when they announced the shade for 2010 was the same turquoise that we had just painted Grahm's room? Last week Pantone announced the color of the year for 2012 was Tangerine Tango.

I admit I wasn't super excited because I am not a huge fan of orange. A few people on Twitter were talking about if they did or didn't like orange & I made mention that I'd be interested to see how it would be brought into sewing & quilting, if at all. There's some beautiful tangerine fabric out there but it's just not a color that you see a LOT of in quilting.

Ali saw me wondering out loud how tangerine would be used in the quilting world and she proposed an idea ... so we're excited to announce the Tangerine Tango Quilt Challenge!

Tangerine Tango Quilt Challenge

Pantone has this to say about Tangerine Tango: “Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”

Ali and I will announce more details after the holidays but in the mean time you can join our Flickr group to start chatting about if you're up for a the challenge or scope out our all-tangerine-all-the-time inspiration board on Pinterest. Who thinks they want to Tangerine Tango with us? I've already started dreaming up possible color schemes!

  2. I have really been liking tangerine recently. Especially with aqua. I made a quilt this summer that featured those colors http://jenniffier.blogspot.com/2011/09/orange-and-blue-quilt.html
I also have another one that is almost ready to be pieced together in the same color scheme. I will join along. Waiting for more details :)

  3. Orange is a highly under-rated color, especially in quilting. Hmmmm . . . do I need one more project? Probably not. But do I want to Tangerine Tango. Yes.

  5. I am so in. When I moved this year, my new room was painted in a light tangerine and I haven't managed to make a quilt that fits the walls yet. Perfect challenge to finally get me started!

  6. I will have to resist starting a new project, but I think it's a very worthy quilt along. I do love that dark, burnt orange. It's the same shade as Central Park's popular dandelion print.

  9. 'They' say that orange is the new pink! ;o)

I've recently added quite a bit of orange/tangerine to a quilt I'm making and I'm pleasantly pleased.....it's not a color I would have embraced previously.

    Your challenge sounds like fun.

  11. I looked at my own stash and the shade was decidedly spartan, though if I could pair it with other colours then I could probably come up with something. What's our time frame?

  16. Tangerine Tango is a new color added back in July 2010 to the exclusive colors offered by Stampin' Up! in our product line. I'm a demonstrator with SU! and have started to really like the orange shades we offer. I made a zipper pouch for the post summit swap using the orange fabrics I received in the Sewing Summit color wheel charm swap and several of the pieces were on the tangerine side. This color is growing on me!
